The Intensive Teacher Institutes are the first phase of BOEP, designed to enhance teachers’ knowledge about the Colorado Plateau Bioregion, develop ways to integrate Place-based outdoor education into classrooms, and satisfy each states’ core curricula, district requirements, and national standards.
Place-based Education is defined as an interdisciplinary, hands-on, minds-on investigation of the environment and community around you. Place-based education recognizes the importance of viewing the environment within the context of human influences as well as natural processes and systems. Teachers as learners are engaged in direct experiences and are challenged to use higher order thinking skills.
During the school year the Program Manager and 4 Regional Coordinators work with 40 teachers, in 20 schools, in four states, implementing and integrating BOEP into each district’s curriculum. We accomplish this by a two-year series of in-services, mini-workshops, and direct teacher mentoring and training in each school.
BOEP is creating a book entitled Discovering Our Watershed: Voices and Images of Young People on the Colorado Plateau. This page will provide more information on how you can get your class involved with this project.
